TCP LPD Print Servers
There are a number of options for printing via the PSU Data Backbone. These options typically require someone with a technical background to set them up and do the testing. Notify your LAN Administrator or Technical Contact within your department, college, or campus for support.
Windows
AIS recommends and supports Windows Print Server Software for use with TCP printing.
Note: The Windows NT and 2000 operating systems provide internal LPD services.
Macintosh
AIS also supports lpDaemon for Macintosh. LpDaemon (LPD) is freeware and can be downloaded from the CAC FTP archive.
Note: Apple Laser Writers are shipped with Ethernet connections have TCP/IP printing capability.
Other Print Servers
Novell
Novell LANs have network loadable modules (NLM) that will provide LPD support. Log on to Novell's Web site to find the NLM that would be
appropriate for your version of Netware.
HP
HP has a hardware product called HP JetDirect Print Servers. This is an excellent
option for multiple PC and Mac users on a LAN with only a limited number of printers. It allows several PC users to share just one printer. The product can also be purchased through the
Computer Store for about $300-$400 depending on your specific printer's availability.
Network Instruments
Network Instruments provides an LPD client called NI print for the Windows 95/98 operating systems.
Brooks Internet Software
Brooks Internet Software offers an LPD print server solution called Remote Print Manager.
