Personal Web Hosting

Personal Web Hosting is provided to Penn State students, faculty, and staff with an Access Account for no charge. Personal Web Hosting comprises two spaces: a public space and a protected space. Access to a user’s public space is available to anyone on the web. A user can restrict access to their protected space to Access Accounts or Friends of Penn State accounts. Public personal web sites are hosted at www.personal.psu.edu; protected personal web sites are hosted at protected.personal.psu.edu.

To request personal Web hosting, please complete the online Application for a personal Web Space Account.

Departmental Web Hosting

Department Web Hosting is available to Penn State colleges, campuses, and departments for a one-time set up charge and monthly maintenance changes based on requested disk space. By default, department web space is public but access may be restricted via WebAccess. Department web sites are hosted at www.dept.psu.edu.

To request Department Web Hosting, please submit a completed ITS for Fee Services Request Form to the ITS Accounts Office by email via accounts@psu.edu or print and mail to:

Student Organization Web Hosting

In conjunction with the Division of Student Affairs, AIS provides web hosting to student organizations for no charge. Student organization web sites are hosted at www.clubs.psu.edu.

To request student organization web hosting, please contact the Student Affairs office for your campus.

Course On-Line Account (COLA) Web Hosting

Course On-Line Account (COLA) web hosting is offered to instructors for no charge to publish course materials on the web. Course web sites are hosted at www.courses.psu.edu.

To request course web hosting, please submit a completed ITS Academic Computing Services Request Form to ITS Computer Account Services.

COLA uses PASS space to hold course web content and supports any kind of client-side dynamic content, such as: JavaScript, Flash, Java applets, and html files. The service also supports server-side dynamic content types, including: Server Side Includes (SSI) and PHP Hypertext Preprocessor.

NOTE: .php files are automatically redirected to php.scripts.psu.edu for processing.

Once gaining editorial rights, COLA users can manage permissions to the folder on the courses web site. Users will be able to access the feature through the “Restrict Access to COLA” link on www.work.psu.edu. The link is located under the PASS section.

Virtual Web Hosts

A virtual web host is an extension to departmental web space which grants a URL such as http://www.department-name.psu.edu/ (where department-name is either the name of the department or some name chosen by the department to reflect the purpose of the site, subject to availability). Normally, departmental web space uses a URL such as http://www.dept.psu.edu/department-name/. Virtual web hosts are available for department Web Hosting Services and require a one-time installation fee, in addition to the monthly file storage service charges.

A “secure” virtual web host is a virtual web host which uses the https URL scheme and protects data in transit between the web server and the web browser over a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption tunnel. A secure virtual web host requires a one-time installation fee plus the costs for the certificate registration, in addition to the monthly file storage service charges.

To request a virtual web host, please submit a completed ITS for Fee Services Request Form to the ITS Accounts Office by email via accounts@psu.edu or print and mail to:

ITS Accounts Office

University Park, PA 16802

Web Application Hosting

In addition to web sites, AIS hosts several web applications, including, but not limited to:

Web Hosting Features

HTTPS

Most AIS-provided web services are also available via secure HTTP (HTTPS). For non-virtual host customers, this support is automatically provided. Virtual host customers must purchase a certificate; contact ITS Computer Account Services or e-mail accounts@psu.edu for more information.

SCRIPTS

The PHP scripts web host is a platform for providing dynamic content.

The test scripts web host is a platform for running Common Gateway Interface (CGI) executables. Due to the CGI security model, users may not install their own scripts; instead, a user should request that scripts be installed. When a request is received, the script must undergo a successful review before installation.

PHP scripting is available on all AIS-provided web hosting services; non-virtual host services will automatically redirect requests for PHP pages to the scripts service. To request PHP script support for your virtual host, please send your request to the IT Service Desk; for other PHP requests, please contact AIS; to request installation of a CGI script, please contact the Webmaster.

SERVER-SIDE INCLUDES

Server-Side Includes (SSI) is a mechanism for simple dynamic content, such as variable substitution and page transclusion.

By default, all files named with a “.shtml” suffix will be served with SSI processing enabled. Users can enable processing for additional suffixes; see Apache Tutorial: Introduction to Server Side Includes for a practical introduction.

SSI is available on all AIS-provided web services.

WEBACCESS

Penn State WebAccess support is available on all AIS-provided web services accessed via HTTPS. To request WebAccess support on an existing AIS-hosted web site, please contact the IT Service Desk or e-mail itservicedesk@psu.edu.
