Instructions for Requesting AIS TCP Printer ID

This document assumes that you, the reader, are the technical contact for your area. Follow the steps below to use the PSU data backbone to print from within AIS applications to your local printer. Users should contact their Technical Support person or LAN Administrator to complete these steps.
  1. Your LAN or workstation must already be permanently attached to the Backbone (i.e. you can use a web browser and an email client, such as Eudora).

  2. Acquire and configure a TCP LPD Print Server. Choose a LPD Server that will meet your requirements (e.g., will it support PostScript printing in a Novell NetWare environment using a HP LaserJet?).

  3. You must:
    • acquire (or know) the TCP Print Server's IP address.
    • acquire (or know) the TCP Print Server's Fully Qualified Host Name (FQDN).

If these have not already been assigned, see the instructions in TNS' A Guide to the Penn State Data Backbone. The FQDN must actually be listed in OTC's the Domain Name System or else our configuration procedure will fail.

  4. You must assign a 1 to 7 character name to the print queue. This name will be case-sensitive.

  5. Determine the type of output you want to receive over the Backbone via this print queue, either Lineprint or PostScript. Please note that having a laser printer does not imply you can/will support PostScript printing. If you do not have a postscript compatible laser printer, please choose lineprinter.

    • If you are using a Postscript printer, you'll have to decide on the output type and the output orientation (portrait, landscape, or auto-page).
    • Auto-Page will allow the AIS software to dynamically determine the page orientation, based upon the maximum line size of the source.

  6. Configure the TCP Print Server software so that it knows the following:

    • It's IP address
    • Print queue name(s)
    • Output device characteristics
    • If your LPD service has a security filter and you wish to use it, you must add oas.psu.edu and oas2.psu.edu to the security filter.

  7. Make sure to successfully test this configuration before filling in the TCP Print Number Request Form.

  8. Complete the TCP Print Number Request Form.

  9. If you want this new TCP number as your default printer in COM-Plete, contact the AIS Security Office. Simply provide the printer's TCP number, AIS userid, and also the COMs that will be used, as in ACOM, CCOM, etc.

In order for us to successfully process your request, you must have your LPD Server available. If your Server is turned off, we will be unable to check your configuration parameters and make sure your host is generally available for LPD print serving. When this form has been processed successfully, we will send you email with your printer queue's new VTAM ID.

>Note:

  • The TCP Number is actually a special VTAM ID that is recognized by the mainframe.

Example: The breakdown of the VTAM ID TCP1234P would be:

    • TCP just denotes a TCP connection/device.
    • 1234 is the four (4) digit number assigned and is used as the COM-Plete TID number for (for A/B/C/DCOM/Testais).
    • P denotes that this is a printer.
