Macintosh TCP File Transfer Using TN3270

This documentation covers MacIntosh TCP/IP File Transfer with the Administrative Information Services' mainframe computer at the Pennsylvania State University.

The following text will allow the user to navigate through the documentation easily:

Getting Started

In order to accomplish a file transfer using the following instructions, you will need the following:

  • A TSO account at the Administrative Information Services (AIS). If you do not have a TSO account, contact the AIS Support Center, 814-863-2276.
  • Access to a personal computer with a working connection to the Administrative Information Services and one of the listed 3270 terminal emulation communications software products installed and functioning.

> Important:

In this document, we have used CAPITAL LETTERS to indicate commands you type in response to the prompts; and keynames are capitalized and enclosed by <and> signs, for example <ENTER>.

When we give examples of file transfer commands, the following conventions are used:

  • HOST.DATASET.NAME = the mainframe Data Set Name (DSN) and
  • C:\FILENAME.EXT where: C:\ = the PC target drive and path and
  • FILENAME.TXT = the PC filename and appropriate extension.

> Caution:

If you specify a data set name that already exists on the mainframe when you send a file, your PC file will overwrite the mainframe file. Likewise, if you specify a PC file name that already exists the mainframe file will overwrite your PC file when you download.

If you have problems after following the steps in this document, contact the AIS Support Center 814-863-2276, for assistance.

In addition to access to TSO, you need access to the MVS FTP command set within TSO to accomplish file transfer via the Data Backbone. Contact your Access and Security Representative (ASR) to get access to MVS FTP. If you do not know who this person is, contact the AIS Support Center, 814-863-2276, to find out who has this responsibility in your area.

You also need a SecurID token to access the Administrative Information Services mainframe via the Data Backbone.

Request access to the Administrative Information Services mainframe through the Data Backbone. You will be sent a list of specifications and a letter of certification which must be signed by your LAN administrator and Access and Security Representative (ASR).

Send an IDCC to Molly Kline (MZK2@PSU.EDU), 3 Shields Building for $75 per card. Once the signed certification and a copy of the IDCC from Carolyn Brown are received by the security officer, SecurID tokens will be distributed.

You must have used the Telpass utility in your McIntosh Network Configuration folder to modify FTP Pass, creating a New User. A file named Config.tel is placed in the System Folder. If you need assistance, contact your local System Administrator.

  8. At the READY prompt, type FTP and YOUR local Internet address (see your System Administrator to get this information) or the Internet address of the FTP server you want to send the information.
  9. Identify yourself to the destination Host (This will likely be your local PC), type your local password and press <ENTER>. If you have not set up your local name and password, any name will do.
  10. At the MVS mainframe FTP "FTPALL011I Command:" prompt, we are ready to type our file transfer commands.
  11. You may want to clear your screen by pressing the RETURN key.

Transferring files FROM the AIS Mainframe
  1. To transfer a file from TSO to your local Mac type:
    PUT 'DATASET.NAME' FILENAME.EXT
  2. You should see several system messages including one stating "226 Transfer complete".
  3. At this point, your file is at its destination and you may transfer another file. You may first want to clear your screen by pressing the + key on the numeric keypad and then the <ENTER> key.
  4. Your file will be in the folder you had open on your Mac desktop. If you cannot see it, use the Find command in the File Menu.

Transferring files TO the AIS Mainframe
  1. To send a file to the Administrative Information Services' mainframe, at the mainframe FTP "FTPALL011I Command:" prompt, type:
    GET FILENAME.EXT 'DATASET.NAME'
  2. You should see several system messages including one stating "226 Transfer complete".

Closing Your TSO Session
  1. Close your mainframe FTP session by typing QUIT at the mainframe FTP "FTPALL011I Command:" prompt.
  2. At the READY prompt, type LOGOFF to close your TSO session.
  3. Don't forget to turn off your local FTP server.
It's a security risk to leave it running.
