TextPad Installation Instructions for First Time eDDS Users

For users with WindowsNT, Windows 2000, Windows XP operating systems:
TextPad is a file editor with enhanced edit and print capabilities. It is available for use by Penn State employees under a site-license, and is therefore recommended for use with eDDS output.


1. Close all other running applications (this includes virus protection software).

2. To download TextPad now, click DOWNLOAD.

3. A Save As... window will appear asking you where to store the zipped file on your local hard drive. Place the file in the C:\Temp directory.

4. The zipped filename will be TP32. Click on the SAVE button.

5. A Saving Location window will appear and will indicate when the file is done downloading.

6. When it is done, exit out of your web browser.

7. Open Windows Explorer.

8. Navigate your way to where you stored the TP32 zipped file.

9. Double click on the TP32 file.

10. A Win Zip Self-Extractor window will appear. Click on the UNZIP button.

11. A window saying 91 files were unzipped successfully. Click on OK.

12. A Welcome will appear. Click on CONTINUE.

13. A Limited Warranty and Remedies pop up will appear. Penn State has a University site license for this product. Click on the I AGREE button.

14. A Set Up Installation Options window will appear. Install the 32-bit edition. Click on the CONTINUE button.

15. A Text Pad Setup? may appear asking if you should create a directory to store the application. Click on the YES button.

16. A Spell Checking window will appear. Select the language of your choice. Most Penn Staters would select US English. Click on the CONTINUE button.

17. A Setup window will appear. Click on the CONTINUE button.

18. A Text Setup menu will appear. Click on NO and return to Windows Explorer.

19. Exit out of Windows Explorer.

20. Open your web browser and go to the eDDS home page

21. At the eDDS Logon Page, enter your eDDS userid and password. Click on the LOGON button.

22. A Security Information window may appear. Read this message and click on CONTINUE.

23. Click on the SUBMIT button to begin navigating to the report you are looking for.

24. Click on the LIST DEPTS. link.

25. At Department Results Page, select your department.

26. At Account Results Page, select list documents link, for the folder you wish to view.

27. At Folder Results Page, select list documents link, for the folder you wish to view.

28. At Documents Results Page, select list pages link for the report you wish to view.

29. At page results, select the Win link.

VERY IMPORTANT SET OF STEPS....

30. An unknown file type window will appear. The first time you retrieve a report from eDDS, this window will appear. It is asking you to associate this file type with an application. Select the PICK APP... button.

31. Click on the BROWSE button.

32. Navigate your way to C:\PROGRAM FILES\TEXTPAD\. Highlight TXTPAD32.EXE and click on the OPEN button.

33. At the configure External Viewer Window, you should see C:\PROGRAM FILES\TEXTPAD\TXTPAD32.EXE in the view windows. Click on the OK button.

34. A warning message will appear. This is a warning about downloading files to your PC from places you can trust. Select OPEN FILE and click on the OK button.

35. You should see the report that was selected from the eDDS server. At this point you can view, edit, print, or search within the report.

36. For TextPad printing, set print font at courier new/regular/8/landscape. You may later adjust the font size up or down as needed.
