Recommendations for Card Reading System Conversion
Several departments that operate large University-wide card reading systems have agreed to convert their systems on Monday, December 20 to the new PSU ID and id+ card numbers. These departments are:
- Housing and Food Services
- ID Card Operations
- Library Circulation Services
- Police Services
Cardholders will be instructed that many card reading systems will be converted on December 20 and that faculty, staff and students who plan to be on-campus during the last 11 days of 2004 should carry both the new and old cards during that time and may be required to use the new card earlier than January 1, 2005 depending on which system they are accessing via their card.
We strongly encourage other departmental card reading systems to convert on December 20 as well to minimize confusion for the population who will continue to be on-campus and actively using cards. The id+ card office will provide a conversions utility for those departments who will need a file of the new 16 digit card numbers that will be assigned to each new card. If your department will require a conversion file, please contact Joel L. Weidner at jlw2@psu.edu
Notes for Card System Administrators
- The new PSU ID number will be printed on the front of the new id+ card and encoded on track one of the magnetic strip
- A new 16-digit id+ card number will be issued and will be printed on the front of the card and encoded on track two of the magnetic strip
- The new id+ cards will be visually and magnetically distinct from the old cards. The magnetic encoding format on track one of the cards has changed. Individual departments running local card-reading systems will be responsible for the conversion of their databases to the new numbers and for testing that their readers work properly with the new cards. The new encoding format and test cards are available to card system administrators. For more information and for test cards, local card swipe system administrators should print and submit this request form to the id+ Office
- The testing of centralized systems that serve multiple departments will be conducted by the administrators of the central systems. Card-reading systems that have already passed initial testing include:
- Food Services - point of sale (Blackboard)
- Housing - University Park residential door access (Blackboard)
- Housing – campus residential door access (Best/Lenel)
- ITS – Access Account signature stations
- Library circulation desk readers
- Physical Plant-maintained off-line door access readers (Best)
- University Police – University Park door access (Sensormatic)
